Summer Projects

You may, or may not remember, (I don't blame you if you don't, it's been a while), I started making my first quilt WAY back in February...

Excuse the crappy iPhone photo.

In hindsight I probably should have started with something smaller for my first quilting project because this behemoth of a quilt is about to be the death of me.

I started cutting everything out and sewing squares together back in February, but then put it on hold for a few months to rearrange half my house, (seemingly), in order to move my office/craft room upstairs to a big empty room instead of cramped into one of our front bedrooms.

In May I finally started work back on it again, and in one week it went from this little pile of squares to a much larger pile of squares, to being put together and 1/4 of the way quilted.

This picture was taken before pinning the layers together and quilting.

And then I go so stinkin' sick of looking at the thing that I couldn't bear to work on it anymore.

Plus, you would never think that sewing could be so physically demanding, but I'm telling you my shoulders and arms were so sore from trying to strong arm that quilt through the machine to do free-motion quilting. To top it off, the more I looked at the quilt the more I didn't like it. I was getting to the point where I hated it and thought it looked absolutely terrible.

So I decided to take a little break from the big quilt to try and get some perspective.

Because I was tired of looking at the all neutral colors quilt with about 11 spools of thread worth of beige stitching, I decided to go in the complete opposite direction and make a little, (i.e. extremely doable and not overwhelming), baby quilt for some friends of ours' who are expecting a baby boy.

I had so much fun picking out all the "boy fabrics" and making little pinwheels and stitching everything together with bright blue thread. This taking a break from the big "boring" quilt, sure was a good idea. ;) It was way more fun to look at sharks and rocket ships, tigers and elephants and zebras and baseballs. The baby boy quilt was moving right along at record pace...

And then we went on our camping trip and I spent a week teaching VBS and it totally threw off my groove.

To top it off, one of the quilting blogs I read, P.S. I Quilt, had announced a quilt along that I thought sounded like loads of fun. The two quilts I already had in progress were from quilt alongs that were on blogs months ago, so while I was following all the directions I didn't have the fun of doing it along with lots of other people. Plus, by participating as the quilt along was happening, I would have deadlines, so hopefully it wouldn't take me 4 months to finish!

So, I decided it sounded like too much fun to pass up participating, and ordered some fabric for my synchronized squares quilt along. In this fabric set:

Pretty stinkin' cute if I do say so myself! I think it's going to be super fun on our guest bed at Christmas time. All my fabric arrived last week, and on Friday I got the first step, (cutting squares and making binding), done.

If you're keeping track that's now 3 quilting projects I have going on simultaneously. Oy.

My goal for this week is to finally finish the quilting on the behemoth quilt, pick a backing for the baby boy quilt, and keep on track with the synchronized square quilt along.

I guess it'll definitely keep me from getting bored with one project by working on it for too long! I would like to get at least one of these wrapped up soon though! haha

the Farmer's Market!

We have been enjoying lots of fresh produce in the past few weeks. Summer just makes it so much easier to get in your servings of fruits and veggies. Especially when there are tomato sandwiches and grilled bruschetta, watermelon, sauteed kale, fresh sliced tomatoes, squash, and berries to be enjoyed!

It kind of makes up for all the 100+ degree days we've been having lately. Kind of... ;)

P.S. I know I've been a little M.I.A. lately, I taught Vacation Bible School last week, and I was so tired after corralling 4 year olds for 5 hours every morning that I just came home and crashed everyday leaving no time for blogging and nothing interesting to blog about. I'll try to be better in the next few weeks, but I'm not making any promises, something about summer just makes me want to float around in the pool, eat sandwiches for dinner, stay outside reading until the sun goes down, and sleep. Ah, bliss.

Camping

This past weekend we went camping at Mt Petit Jean in Arkansas with my parents. It was hot but we had a blast! I took 215 pictures, but I'll spare you a little and just share my favorites. ;)

My parents beat the crap out of us at Phase 10

I loved these mini Chinese lanterns they brought!
**Joshua and Jordan you should be proud of me, I took this picture using NO automatic settings on my camera! ;) **

The structure in the above picture is the Cedar Falls overlook--you'll see lots of pictures taken from on top of that overlook towards the bottom of this post.

Photobucket
Arkansas hills from an overlook on the outside rim of the mountain. When it's not so hazy you can see more hills. It was just too humid to get a good view while we were up there.

The next few pictures were all taken from the Cedar Falls Overlook...

Cedar Creek Falls - We didn't hike down into the falls this time because it was too stinkin' hot!! We did do that hike a few years ago, and it is gorgeous.

Remember that picture of us earlier? See that dinky little overlook on the top of the cliff in this picture? That's where we were standing when we took the picture of ourselves! I couldn't believe how tiny and precarious it looked from the other side!

Photobucket
More rocks. I think they look really neat. The rock formation is something that starts with an "s", but I can't remember the name right now.

Flowers-I got a new lens for my birthday that made this shot possible. ;)

Yummy shish-kabobs!

We had a lot of fun, but it feels so good to be home! We got back around 5:00 last night and it was nice to just be a little lazy, be barefoot, not have to wear sunscreen and bug spray, take a shower where I could control the temperature without wearing flip-flops, and sleep in our nice bed.

I may, or may not, be definitely did, go to bed at 9:30 last night and sleep 12 1/2 hours straight. ;)

P.S. I'm not sure why these pictures are SO large today! I did them the same way I've been uploading pictures for a couple of months now, and these came out massive and I don't know how to fix it!
